Mom and Dad get discount tickets to HRC dinner

Columbus-With a few weeks still to go, the annual HRC fundraising dinner in Columbus is well within reaching the projected goal of $90,000.

This year's dinner will be held on Friday, June 19 at the Hyatt Regency Ballroom, 350 North High Street. A reception and silent auction at 7:30 p.m. will be followed by the dinner and stage show at 8:30 p.m.

"We hope to put the past of HRC's activism in perspective, while focusing on the future and its challenges," said Jay Dascenzo, co-chair of the dinner committee. "We want to educate and motivate people."

Dascenzo said heis very excited about the way things are going with the planning this year. By the first week of May, 60% of the tickets had already been sold. This year's goal is to sell 600 tickets and raise ad revenues of approximately $12,000.

"The program book is one of the best in the country," Dascenzo said. "We have already sold $11,000 in advertisements and the next closest program in the nation had only raised $1,500 in ad sales."

Dascenzo is also concerned that the process of organizing the dinner be “as successful as the actual dinner itself

"We want to get more people involved and make sure that diverse groups within the GLB community come together in the process," he said. As part of this goal, Dascenzo and others on the planing committee have focused on "an increased outreach to the lesbian community."

"We have more women table captains this year than ever before and we have seven women on the planning committee," Dascenzo said.

In keeping with the nature of this year's keynote speaker, the committee is also reaching out to more parents of the GLB community

to turn out.

"P-FLAG is very involved this year," Dascenzo said, "and we are offering a Momand-Dad discount of twenty-five dollars off the ticket price."

In addition to the keynote address, Dascenzo promises lots of great theater, music and other entertainment.

"We are giving a lot of attention to little details to make this year's dinner a huge success," Dascenzo said. “Unlike last year's dinner, where many people were quite far from the stage, this year's activities are being held "in the round.' What this means is that no group will be more than four tables away from the stage."
